Introduction to the Jean-Michel Mourlot Foundation
The Jean-Michel Mourlot Foundation funds the awarding of an annual painting prize and supports painters in pursuing their vocation.
A radiologist and visual artist based in Marseille, Jean-Michel Mourlot devoted himself to both professions for many years before fully embracing his artistic passion in the late 1980s—a commitment that earned him recognition among his peers. Aware of his terminal illness in the mid-1990s, he decided to create a way to pass on his passion and support the young artists of the future.
Thus, in 1995, the Jean-Michel Mourlot Foundation was established through a bequest under the auspices of the Fondation de France, with the goal of financing the Jean-Michel Mourlot Painting Prize. Emerging painters honored with this award also have their works exhibited at the Galerie Mourlot Jeu de Paume, which was likewise founded posthumously.
It is a vital form of support for contemporary creation and a way of preserving the memory and artistic legacy of Jean-Michel Mourlot.
